International Day of Families – Talking to a Loved One About Addiction with Compassion

The 15th of May marks International Day of Families—a time to celebrate and strengthen the bonds that hold us together. For many, this includes facing difficult conversations, especially when a loved one is struggling with addiction. Approaching this sensitive topic with compassion, rather than judgment, can make all the difference.

Start by choosing the right moment—somewhere calm and private. Speak from a place of concern, not blame. Use “I” statements to express how their behaviour affects you, such as “I’ve noticed you’ve been struggling, and I’m really worried about you.” Avoid accusatory language like “You always…” or “Why can’t you just…”, which can cause defensiveness.

Listen more than you speak. Your loved one may feel shame or fear, and being truly heard can help reduce these barriers. Show empathy by acknowledging their emotions and validating their experiences.

Avoid ultimatums. Instead, gently encourage them to consider help, and offer to support them in finding it. Whether it’s contacting a therapist, joining a support group, or just talking again another day, let them know you’re there for the long haul.

Addiction can isolate, but families—when united—can be a powerful source of healing. This International Day of Families, take that brave first step toward connection and recovery. Your words, grounded in love and patience, may be the start of their journey to healing.
